NIH K99/R00 Career Development Award

We proudly announce that Thessa Hilgenkamp has received a prestigious NIH K99/R00 Career Development Award. She will be appointed at the Department of Kinesiology and Nutrition of the University of Illinois at Chicago and work with Prof. Bo Fernhall, Dr. Tracy Baynard, and Dr. Philip Clifford

This grant allows her to continue and strengthen her current research focus on autonomic function and exercise in individuals with intellectual disabilities, for which she was collaborating with Prof. Maria Hopman of Integrative Physiology at Radboudumc. In the mentored phase of this grant she will first focus on learning methods and techniques to study central and peripheral limitations in blood flow, and execute a research project in individuals with Down syndrome. The last 3 years of the grant she will perform a large clinical trial to study the effects of exercise on autonomic regulation and blood flow in individuals with Down syndrome. She will continue to be affiliated with the Chair of Intellectual Disability Medicine of the Erasmus MC University Medical Center in Rotterdam.
