Retreat 2017

The first ever Physiomics Retreat ‘Awesome days'

Retreat 2017 30 Jun 2017

Friday June 29th, after priming the group members with strange text messages, the first Physiomics retreat started with a welcome word at the 7th floor of the Physiology department. The overall theme of the weekend was 'communication'.

After handing out the information booklets, we entered the bus, which drove us to Gronau, Germany. Upon arrival at this fabulous location, everybody checked into their rooms and the weekend could really start. During lunch, team captains started making plans to win the group activities and then it was time to start with the first 2 activities.

While 3 groups competed in trying to escape from the tents of a Colombian drugs cartel, the other groups had a clownery workshop. In this workshop, our communication skills were improved by all sorts of silent and not so silent clown activities. At first everybody was a little reserved, but soon the clown in us came out and we all participated full heartedly. We switched during a short break so we could enjoy the other activity as well. After announcing the group that escaped quickest from the tents, we had time for some refreshments.

After a filling BBQ, a specially designed Physiomics pubquiz took place, where we got to know more interesting details about our department members. Who can still recall what the abbreviation CRISPR stands for? And who has feet as big as boats, according to Andreas? After this, our brains could relax again and the party started. Inside we danced the night away with some DJs, while outside a massive camp fire was built, courtesy of Joost. And of course, during the entire day the table football and table tennis competitions continued.

After a short night's sleep and a reviving breakfast (although not everyone fully recovered, Caro), it was time for the last group activity, a logiquiz murder game. Hints could be found and earned while playing small games. Using these hints and good teamwork, the murder puzzle could be solved. In the end, all groups (eventually) managed to determine who killed the professor with what item. We then had a final lunch together during which the overall winning group was announced. The bus ride back to Nijmegen announced the end of the first (and hopefully not last) beautiful 'Physiomics retreat'. It were some really awesome days.

On behalf of all colleagues, we would like to thank wholeheartedly Elja, Jojanneke, Joost, Steef and Vincent for all their work making these days so nice.
