Diabetes Fonds for Jeroen de Baaij

JeroenBreedAward 4 Dec 2017

We proudly announce that Jeroen de Baaij obtained a Junior Fellowship from the Dutch Diabetes Research Foundation (Diabetes Fonds). Jeroen's research proposal 'ARL15: The Missing Link between Type 2 Diabetes and disturbed Mg2+ homeostasis?' was one of the four awarded Junior Fellowships of € 275.000. In this project, Jeroen will investigate the relationship between low magnesium levels and lipid metabolism. Low blood magnesium levels are commonly found in patients with diabetes mellitus type 2. Hypomagnesemia is important as it is related to progression from prediabetes to overt diabetes and associated with insulin resistance. Jeroen will examine the role of hypomagnesemia in the development of disturbed lipid metabolism. The research proposal is a collaborative effort with Prof. dr. Cees Tack from the department of Internal Medicine.

The Dutch Diabetes Research Foundation Fellowships aim to encourage promising scientists to further their career in diabetes research. The goal of the Dutch Diabetes Research Foundation is to give people living with diabetes now and those in the future a better quality of life. To achieve this goal, the Dutch Diabetes Research Foundation ensures that the outcomes of scientific research will be transferred to potential users and benefits patients. Therefore, the research proposal of Jeroen combines fundamental and clinical research. With the Junior Fellowship from the Dutch Diabetes Research Foundation, Jeroen will further pursue his innovative line of research on magnesium disorders in type 2 diabetes mellitus.
