Martijn Maessen completed his study  'Clinical Human Movement Sciences' and joined the Integrative Physiology group as a PhD-student in 2013. His research is focused on cardiovascular diseases and physical activity. Post-mortem and recent in vivo studies report a similar degree of (coronary) atherosclerosis in lifelong athletes as in sedentary controls. This suggests that physical activity does not primarily affect plaque progression, and that the protective effects of exercise training have to be explained by other factors. Therefore, he aims to understand how physical activity protects against atherosclerosis (i.e. plaque development).
