Jenny van der Wijst obtained her PhD degree in Medical Science in 2011 at the Radboud University Nijmegen. Her PhD research was done at the department of Physiology, where she studied the regulation and molecular mechanisms of transepithelial Mg2+ transport using electrophysiological analyses.
Subsequently, she worked as an EMBO funded postdoctoral researcher at the lab of Dario Alessi in the MRC Protein Phosphorylation Unit, Dundee, Scotland. Her collaborative project with the department of Physiology focused on the Transient Receptor Potential Melastatin channel 6 (TRPM6). TRPM6 is unique in the mammalian proteome through its key role in renal Mg2+ handling and the combined action as an ion channel and an alpha-kinase. As an VENI awardee, she works now as a postdoc in our laboratory where she investigates the role of this kinase in the regulation of TRPM6 function.
