Niki Leenders

Niki Leenders is a Medical Doctor who has worked as a resident in training for Internal Medicine since 2010. The first years of her training in Internal Medicine she worked at the Diakonessenhuis in Utrecht and thereafter continued specialization at the University Medical Center in Utrecht. In September 2014 she started as a fellow in Nephrology at the department of Nephrology of the University Medical Center Utrecht.

After receiving a PhD grant from the Dutch Kidney Foundation with dr. Vervloet from the VU Medical Center department of Nephrology in Amsterdam and prof. dr. Hoenderop and dr. de Baaij from the Radboudumc department of Physiology, she interrupted her training in nephrology to perform research and started as a PhD-student in November 2015. The PhD project is a collaboration between the Radboudumc department of Physiology and the VU Medical Center department of Nephrology. Subject of the project is the role of magnesium in cardiovascular disease in renal insufficiency. The project consists of different parts focusing on molecular mechanisms, effects of magnesium in animals, and clinical studies in dialysis patients. Niki performs the different parts of this research in Nijmegen and Amsterdam to effectively combine the complementary expertise of these two academic centers.
